STAR NEWS Updates from Serving The American Rinks Out of the total number of CITs (485), only 238 are considered current CITs. Serving The American Rinks (STAR) has been awarding the Certified Ice Technician designation (CIT) since 2001. Since that time, 485 industry professionals have achieved the designa- tion of CIT through STAR. A very common practice or requirement of any professional designation is that after a specific time period, the designation must be recertified to ensure that the holder is still current on any new technologies or practices in their chosen industry. In 2008, STAR started to require that anyone acquiring a CIT designation to recertify every five years after initially achieving the designation. Another requirement put in place at that time was that a CIT must be an individual member of STAR. This would ensure that such members would receive any news provided by STAR and stay current in the industry. An individual membership would include receiving the weekly STAR membership e-newsletter as well as the bi-monthly RINK Magazine. Out of the total number of CITs (485), only 238 are considered current CITs. A current CIT is someone who has achieved their CIT des- ignations in the last five years, or someone who has recertified their CIT designation for another five years and is an individual member of STAR. There are currently two ways to recertify your CIT: 1. STAR offers a CIT Review Session at NARCE each year where you participate in an instructor-led review of the CIT materials and then complete the CITR test. A score of 60 percent is required to pass and recertify your professional designation for another five years. 2. A person that holds a CIT can take the challenge exam at any STAR regional event or SIRO program anywhere in the country, again achieving a score of 60 percent to pass and recer- tify for another five years. STAR will be investigating the possibility of having the CITR challenge exam offered online in the future to make it easier for our members to maintain their CIT designation. The cost to take the challenge exam is $125. Beginning Jan. 1, 2015, included in this cost of recertification is a one-year indi- vidual membership to STAR. It is up to the individual to main- tain that membership for the following four years or until they recertify again. On Jan. 1, 2015 STAR published a list of all professional desig- nation holders on our website under the education banner at the top of the main page of starrinks.com. Only the current holders of these designations are listed on this page. At some point in early 2015, STAR will be reaching out to all of the expired CIT designation holders and encouraging them to recertify. If you have any questions regarding the CIT designation, please contact Don Moffatt, Senior Director of Education Programs at STAR, at (719) 538-1110 or donm@starrinks.com.
