Download the app today to prepare for the 2015 tournament. , Friends of Fort Dupont Ice Arena in Washington, D.C. and Idaho IceWorld in Boise are this year's recipients of the Prudential Skating Fund awards. The Prudential Skating Fund's mission is to provide financial support to underserved groups and communities within the sport of figure skating. Last year Brooklyn Ice in New York and Paramount Iceland in California were the inaugural Prudential Skating Fund recipients. Friends of Fort Dupont Ice Arena received Prudential's $10,000 Enrichment award for its proposal to further engage its competitive beginning and advanced skaters, as well as enhance opportunities for its Learn-to-Skate and Kids on Ice P.L.U.S. participants. Ty Newberry, executive director and general manager of the Friends of Fort Dupont Ice Arena, said the award from Prudential will allow the facility to better serve area children who would otherwise not be able to afford to learn how to skate. "We are extremely excited and grateful to have received the award," Newberry said. "This will allow us to make a deeper impact with our programs. We are a nonprofit that has been around for almost 20 years and have worked hard to make a positive impact on the kids in the Washington, D.C., area, especially in the Ward 7 and Ward 8 communities. We will continue to work hard to put smiling faces on the ice." Idaho IceWorld, City of Boise Parks & Recreation Department, received Prudential's $15,000 Building Block award. Idaho IceWorld, the only ice arena in the greater Boise area, will use the award to offer skating opportunities to people with disabilities and eventually start a therapeutic skating program within its Basic Skills program. For Jackie Woodland, hockey/ice skating recreation specialist at Idaho IceWorld, receiving the Prudential Skating Fund award means a lot on a personal level. Woodland served as the figure skating venue director for the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games when it was in Idaho. She discovered at that time that there was nothing in place statewide that offered those specially challenged or disabled athletes the opportunity and platform to learn to skate. "In the position I'm in now, I see we do have a few individuals with disabilities who have been mainstreamed into our learn-to- skate program," Woodland said. "It works for some, but some struggle with it. That's when I said we have to get a program going and I pursued the Prudential Skating Fund award."
