Preparations have begun for the 48th edition of the Delta Maple Syrup Festival to be held Satur- day and Sunday April 18 and 19. Since the first edition of the festival in 1967, Cana- da's Centennial year, the festival has become a spring tradition in North Leeds which has evolved with the times. What hasn't changed is pancakes and maple syrup which will be served at the Agricultural Hall from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and the oppor- tunity to buy this season's syrup from local produc- ers. Some activities will be taking place both days including a craft sale/flea market on the upper level of the hall, music onsite by Rock Wizard DJ Services, tours at the Old Stone Mill, and wagon rides from the fair grounds to Lower Beverley Lake Park. Special events on Satur- day include face painting at the fair grounds and photo opportunities with cartoon characters, begin- ning at 11:00 on Saturday. At the Old Stone Mill on Saturday there will be blacksmithing demonstra- tions in the drive shed and a milling demonstration at the mill at 1 p.m. At the DARS rink the 3rd Annual Elmer Jones Memorial Ball Hockey Tournament will be held on Saturday from 8:00 to 4:00. The system has processed enough waste- water from lagoon one that pumps started draw- ing sludge from the bot- tom. A study of the lagoons last year revealed that about 29 per cent of lagoon one capacity was lost due to sludge build- up. The industry norm is less than 10 per cent according to a presenta- tion by an AECOM engi- neer at a Westport Council meeting. Normally, wastewater enters lagoon one and set- tles for a period before it is pumped up to lagoon two for further settling. The summer land application of the last three years has ideally been drawn from lagoon two. Sitting at 79 cm deep on March 5, the operator had lagoon one closer to 60 cm when pumps start- ed drawing sludge. Mayor Ron Holman is disappointed with the March 4 ultimatum letter the township received from a police superinten- dent. The Township had a meeting with the Minister of Community Safety and Corrections Yasir Naqvi on February 24 to discuss the inclusion of service levels to be written in to the municipality's OPP contract. "During that meeting we felt we had come to an agreement as to what the service level would be in Rideau Lakes. At my request it was to be reflect- ed in the revised agree- ment," said Holman.
