The following May, David Bull (Le Grand David) announced the theatre was for sale, and speculation about its future ran rife. Bull closed a deal in October 2013, amid much mystery sur- rounding the unnamed buyer. In November, the parties revealed businessman/philanthropist Henry Bertolon had purchased it for $1.2 million. He then leased it to the newly formed nonprofit Cabot Performing Arts Center for a dollar for 18 months. Now, the group must raise $5 million for renovations. If they are successful, The Cabot will remain open as a nonprofit with both live programming and films 350 days a year. The plan is to have renovations phased in, with little disruption to the calendar of events. Comprising the nonprofit are Bertolon; Bill Howard, chairman and former president of Beverly Bank; Richard Marino, owner of The Cabot is a classic example of an early 20th- century movie palace. Below, The old marquee will be replaced with a 21st-century digital version.
