It is finally official. The Westport Rideaus will be one of the 16 teams in the newly-mint- ed Central Canada Hock- ey League II (CCHL2). The founding mem- bers of the CCHL2 con- vened for the first time Monday night in Kemptville as represen- tatives from all 16 teams sat down to start ironing out the new league's details. The surviving fran- chises from the Eastern Ontario Jr. Hockey League EOJHL also include Renfrew, Arnpri- or, Perth, Athens, Brockville, Prescott, Winchester, Char-Lan, Alexandria, Casselman, Clarence, Ottawa, West Ottawa, Metcalfe and Stittsville. As expected, despite no official announcement until now, Gananoque, Akwesasne, Shawville and Gatineau were the victims of the downsiz- ing, as the new league decided to stick with teams in the Hockey East Ontario (HEO) territory. With a goal of getting to 16 teams, it was also rumored Morrisburg and Almonte would be the other two franchises to be eliminated. That also turned out to be accurate. In the original discus- sions, the six teams would each receive $30,000 as compensa- tion. At one time, the West- port Rideaus were among the organizations that could face extinction but the team decided to sell the franchise to the CJHL's Smiths Falls Bears in February, secur- ing their future. On Monday, Marco Scapilletti of the Arnpri- or Packers was voted the leagues' Chairman of the Board of Governors.
