Coachella We can't not include the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in this list, especially as it has become one of the biggest draws on the festival calendar. Spread over two April weekends, Coachella is home to impressive art installations as well as ridiculous musical line-up - this year's acts include AC/DC, Alesso, Caribou, Tame Impala, Flying Lotus, Jack, White, SBTRKT, Drake, MK, Hot Natured, and Jamie xx to name but a few. And if you like hair dye, flower crowns and suede fringing, Coachella is your spiritual home. Indie-ness If you're all about the hipster life but couldn't bag a ticket to Coachella, Palm Springs is the place for you. It has super cool architecture and design, thrift stores in abundance, and plenty of arty (read weird) bits and bobs you can pick up for flat. It's an Instagrammer's dream. Old school glamour Palm Springs is also a throwback to a different era - Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, and Elvis all used to party in Palm Springs, and Don Draper escaped LA for a wild weekend there. So grab a cocktail, lounge by the pool and pretend you're in Mad Men. Sunshine Ok, this is an obvious one, but worth mentioning all the same. Clear skies, low humidity, sunshine almost year round – yeah sounds pretty good to us. sun shines almost year round R&R Palm Springs has always been a place of relaxation, so if you feel that you need to heal yourself, head out to the desert. You can find a range of spa therapies and retreats available – nudist colony anyone? – and all manner of green juices to restore and revitalise, which could come in very handy after a weekend of partying down the valley at Coachella. Palm trees Again, a pretty obvious one given the town is called PALM Springs, but there really is something special about seeing palm trees everywhere, especially if you're more accustomed to brutalist office blocks and London traffic. In fact, the general landscape of Palm Springs is pretty incredible. There are mountains, desert, and actual canyons. Don't get any of those in London. Aerial Tramway Hitch a lift up the sheer Chino Canyon to the top of a mountain in just ten minutes. No biggie. Oh and the views from the top are pretty stunning too. Date shakes You know, made with dates from date palms. South Cali is a date mecca, and shakes have been popular in the area since the 1930s. Grab this thick, sweet treat for a true taste of Palm Springs. Don't leave town without trying one. Wind farms The good people of Palm Springs are keeping it green with a mammoth wind farm out in the desert, which produces enough energy to power 300,000 homes. If you don't drive through it on your way into town, it's well worth taking a wind farm tour, if only to see the sheer scale of it. 7 Issue 74 / 2015 travel guestlist.net 19 9 great things about Palm sPrings We've rounded up the reasons why Palm Springs should be on your travel bucket list, and yes, Coachella is one of them
