STARRINKS.COM MAY.JUNE.2015 / 35 interactive presentation of science demonstrations and hands-on activities, students, teachers, chaperones and engaged parents strap on skates for skating lessons. The Scientific Method Pete Robichaud is one of the found- ers of both the Palouse Ice Rink and the Science on Ice program. "One of my goals for a community rink was to be sure that every kid goes there at least once to see if skating is for them. At the same time, engage the kids into active science outside the classroom in the coolest place in town," said Robichaud. "Science on Ice was the perfect opportu- nity to bring them there." Eight years later, all the fifth-grade teachers in Moscow, Pullman (Wash.) and neighboring smaller towns in the Palouse clamor to participate in the coolest field trip of the year. Since 2007, more than 4,000 students from 14 schools have experienced a Science on Ice field trip, and it continues to get rave reviews from students, teachers, volunteers and rink management. At the end of every session, teachers are given two-for-one passes to hand out to their students to entice them back to the rink along with their family or friends. "We've seen a return rate of about 80 percent," said rink manager Chris Storhok. "We know that these kids leave the rink excited about science and even more excit- ed to come back and skate again. Many of our students live in small rural communi- ties and have never skated before, so this is a great introduction to what we hope will become a lifelong sport." , Continued on page 36 These facilities benefit from ARID-Ice desiccant dehumidification for full capacity enhanced humidity control while maintaining automatic indoor air quality.
