Leeds-Grenville resi- dents face increased hydro bills, significant new taxes, a growing crisis in home care and further cuts to the frontline services they depend on as a result of the irresponsible budget tabled last week by the Wynne government, says MPP Steve Clark. "Ontario PCs listened to Ontarians and gave the government five budget requests designed to give families and businesses the help they need," said Clark. "Not one of those issues is addressed in this budget." In fact, Clark said on the issue of committing to reducing electricity prices, the government has actu- ally managed to do the complete opposite. "After tripling hydro rates since 2003, we learned today bills will go up by $205 this year for most families. And that's before the impact of the government's disastrous Hydro One sell-off and its cap-and-trade tax are felt," said Clark. In addition to the cap- and-trade carbon tax, Clark said the budget's new tax measures include the $100-million beer tax and the job-killing Ontario Retirement Pension Plan (ORPP) payroll tax. "It's a recipe for disas- ter that doesn't address the needs of families and busi- nesses in my riding and across the province," said Clark. While Clark and his caucus called for the gov- ernment to table a detailed spending plan to balance the province's books by 2017-18, the latest budget includes increased spend- ing. Spending will rise by $2.4 billion and the On Tuesday Counties personnel began an inter- im repair to a major cul- vert failure which closed through traffic on County Road 10 between Perth and Westport last Monday. Surveyors were on the site on Tuesday to measure the culvert for its eventual replacement this fall. The steel culvert perfo- rated on the waterline on one side and create a tear in the metal which resulted in a collapse of the culvert on the north side. It was a pothole which drew attention to the dete- rioration below and the sudden road closure last Monday. "We have found that supplying a new structure to replace the failed cul- vert will take at least sev- eral weeks," said Public Works Director Les Shep- herd. A temporary reinforce- ment of the existing cul- vert could enable the road to be opened in a matter of days instead of weeks. Some rented equip- ment, rented aluminum frames and jacking will be used to reinforce the struc- ture to essentially restore the culvert's round shape.,.
