www.travelweekly-asia.com | 23 UNDER MY SKIN WHAT IS IT THAT BRINGS A BIG SMILE TO YOUR FACE? When you travel as much as I do, family moments are always the most precious. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE CHILDHOOD MEMORY? My very first vacation trip abroad with my parents, brother and spaniel dog in a VW Beatle. I was 16 and it was actually the first time I had ever stayed in a hotel. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE RELAXATION? Anything I can do outdoors. I am a long distance runner and love mountain biking. WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER IS YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT? Raising my two daughters although since I spend 80% of my time on the road, my wife would most likely claim more credit for this. IF YOU STOPPED WORK TOMORROW WHAT WOULD YOU DO? Get involved in an NGO in some way or form. I would like to make a difference and enjoy the field of education. WHICH WORDS OR PHRASES DO YOU MOST OVER-USE? Big rocks and key pillars - people might think I am working in construction when I speak that way. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE POSSESSION? A small bronze sculpture of a couple embracing each other. It was given to me by mum on our wedding day in June 2000. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MANAGEMENT STYLE? Very transparent. What you see is what you get; you don't need to interpret what I say because I always say what I think. WHERE WAS YOUR LAST HOLIDAY SPENT? Our Christmas break with the family, skiing in Whistler, Canada – hearing the snow crunching under your feet, enjoying authentic Christmas decorations, that's the best kind of Christmas. WHAT MAKE OF WRISTWATCH DO YOU WEAR? My favourite brand by a long mile is IWC. Sophisticated, understated and timeless elegance – there is no other brand that even comes close. WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE WORLD CITY AND WHY? It would have to be a race between Tokyo and Vancouver. WHICH LIVING PERSON INSPIRES YOU AND WHY? Bill Gates. It is impressive to see how much of his personal wealth he contributes to global Issues to make a difference. He's got more money than most, yet he doesn't use this to show off. WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE INSCRIBED ON YOUR TOMBSTONE? That'd be up to my wife and children. Living today is key for me. MARTIN RINCK, EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & PRESIDENT, ASIA PACIFIC, HILTON WORLDWIDE
