References before a job interview
More employers are asking
prospective job applicants for
references before they are even
selected for an interview, accord-
ing to an article in The Globe and
Mail newspaper. Employers are
even "asking shortlisted candi-
dates to sign forms stating that
they can contact anyone with
whom you have worked, not just
your formal references," accord-
ing to Bruce Sandy, of Pathfinder
Coaching and Consulting. He
said that candidates may not be
selected if they don't allow the
potential employer
to talk to former
co-workers.
He said that
most potential
employers will,
if asked, refrain
from speaking
with a candi-
date's current
employer
in the early
stages of a
job selection
process.
