7 19 Issue 76 / 2015 FILM guestlist.net Recent comments from Maggie Gyllenhaal proves sexism in film is still a huge problem Award-winning actress Maggie Gyllenhaal revealed recently that she was deemed too old, at age 37, to play the lover of a 55-year-old man in a new film. In an interview with The Wrap, she said, "It was astonishing to me. It made me feel bad, and then it made me feel angry, and then it made me laugh." Gyllenhaal didn't give details about the project, producers or other actors involved, so we don't know if the plot required an age gap between roles, but this shouldn't detract from the outrageousness of her experience. It's hard to imagine a man being told he was too old to star opposite a female lead. Anna Kendrick, another extremely successful actress who is currently in a box-office smash hit movie, discussed a similar casting experience in an interview with Glamour. She stated, "There's [a film I'm considering] now where I have to wait for all the male roles to be cast before I can even become a part of the conversation. Part of me get that. [But] part of me is like, 'What the fuck? You have to cast for females based on who's cast as males?" Sexism in Hollywood doesn't come down to one or two isolated incidents, it's widespread and endemic. Earlier this month the American Civil Liberties Union announced it will demand investigations into why major studios consistently fail to hire female directors, identifying "rampant discrimination" in the film industry. And in a recent study the Center for the Study of Women in Television, Film & New Media at San Diego State University found that female actors made up just 12% of the leading roles in the top 100 domestic-grossing films of last year. Despite this seemingly gloomy outlook, Gyllenhaal remains hopeful, saying "A lot of actresses are doing incredible work right now, playing real women, complicated women. I don't feel despairing at all. And I'm more looking with hope for something fascinating."
