7 5 Issue 76 / 2015 GUESTLIST guestlist.net We've already reported on the spate of club closures in the capital – Plastic People, Madame Jojo's, Crucifix Lane, Cable, Joiner's Arms, and Vibe Bar have all been forced to shut their doors, and fabric came under serious threat late last year – but the problem is nationwide. The UK's club culture is under increasing threat from redevelopments and regulations. Vibe Bar owner Alan Miller cited "excessive and unreasonable restrictions" on their activity by the council as the reason behind the venue's closure, and The Arches has undergone a similar fate. The Glasgow Licensing Board took measures to shut the venue on May 15th following a series reported drug and alcohol offences. Under the new licensing rules, the venue would be forced to close every day at midnight, instead of 3am, effectively meaning an end to operations for the club. Despite launching an appeal against the late license withdrawal and securing short term funding, the venue has been placed into administration. The chairman from the venue's board of directors, Gordon Kennedy said: "The Board has taken professional advice and is left no choice than to begin the process of appointing administrators for both The Arches Theatre Ltd and Arches Retail Ltd. This decision has been taken with deep regret as it will have major impact on our staff, business partners, customers, and on Glasgow reputation for night time economy". Over 25,000 people signed a petition to save The Arches, and 400 artists including members of Mogwai, Franz Ferdinand, and Belle & Sebastian signed an open letter calling for the government to ensure that The Arches continues to exist as an arts venue. DJs including Slam, Skream, Erol Alkan, Jackmaster and Felix Da Housecat also threw their weight behind the campaign to keep the club open but to no avail. Kennedy also said he was "humbled by the hundreds of artists and industry professionals from all disciplines who have lent their signature and their voice to the cause" and hopes 'that the administrators, working with partners and stakeholders, can salvage some of the activities for which The Arches is renowned". Sadly The Arches' time has drawn to a close. It has become the latest casualty in the UK's clubbing crisis, and unfortunately this time, more than just a nightclub has been hit. It was a leading music venue, not just in the UK but also in Europe, and it served as a creative hub for all the arts to come together and share the same space. All upcoming events have been cancelled and there will now just be an empty shell of what was once one of Scotland's most iconic arts venues.
