60 REGGAE / DANCE HALL guestlist.net Issue 76 / 2015 The exhibition at Colston Hall, which runs until July 17th, celebrates the city's reggae and sound system scene. It is part of a national tour that will hit Birmingham in August and London in February next year. Curated by Mandeep Samra and Al 'Fingers' Newman, the show is designed to illuminate a part of our history that "has meant so much to so many people, yet has been largely overlooked by mainstream historians". Photographs from the 50s will be on display as will Heritage Hi-Fi, a vintage sound system custom built for the occasion. news sound system culture celebrated Explore the history of Bristol's reggae sound systems in this new show The Expanders have been perfecting their signature roots sound for almost a decade, and now they're back with their latest album, Hustling Culture. Drawing influence from vintage reggae records of the 70s and 80s, the album showcases the group's unique take on reggae, with exquisite three-part harmonies and classic roots-based lyrics. To release the album, The Expanders signed to independent reggae powerhouse Easy Star. Guitarist and vocalist Devin Morrison said of the move, "no other label in reggae has the reputation for putting out such high quality releases with the deep understanding of the entire genre." Releasing with Easy Star has reaffirmed The Expanders' belief in the power of roots, and they hope introduce listeners to their influences - The Ethiopians, The Gladiators and The Mighty Diamonds - with this album. The Expanders have acted as the backing band for the likes of 'The Godfather of Rocksteady' Alton Ellis, The Maytones, and The Wailing Souls, becoming an integral part of the LA reggae scene. With Hustling Culture, the band are set to gain a new legion of fans; as Easy Star boss Eric Smith has said, "we have no doubt that this release will be an inspiration for generations of musicians to come." album of the month More @ guestlist.net/Reggae The Expanders hook up with Easy Star for their latest release the expanders - hustling culture Seasplash Festival is one big celebration of bass!
