www.travelweekly-asia.com | 23 WHAT IS IT THAT BRINGS A BIG SMILE TO YOUR FACE? My granddaughters. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE CHILDHOOD MEMORY? A dog we used to have. He once helped me by pulling me out from a pond. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE RELAXATION? Playing golf, taking a bike ride and playing with my granddaughters. WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER IS YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT? I consider myself really lucky to have worked with many young intelligent people who successfully advanced their careers and became great GMs. I still keep in touch with those "tigers". IF YOU STOPPED WORK TOMORROW WHAT WOULD YOU DO? Probably would work part-time and slow down. WHICH WORDS OR PHRASES DO YOU MOST OVER USE? I do not have standard phrases but I might use "No problem" a bit too much. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE POSSESSION? The 1984 Olympic torch that I ran with across the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco when I was general manager of The Mark Hopkins InterContinental. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MANAGEMENT STYLE? I feel like a conductor of an orchestra. Conductors do not play an instrument, but direct those who do. Together they create a nice piece of music. WHERE WAS YOUR LAST HOLIDAY SPENT? In Cape Cod, Boston. WHAT MAKE OF WRISTWATCH DO YOU WEAR? Blancpain. WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE WORLD CITY, AND WHY? Anywhere my family and friends are. If I had to mention a particular city, it would be San Francisco. IS THERE A MOTTO THAT DRIVES THE WAY YOU LIVE? "Quality is a race without a finish." WHICH LIVING PERSON INSPIRES YOU AND WHY? Creative and legendary hotelier, Ian Schrager. WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER YOUR GREATEST INDULGENCE? Red wine. MARCEL P. VAN AELST, REPRESENTATIVE DIRECTOR AND PRESIDENT, JAL HOTELS UNDER MY SKIN
