Make it Malta
The small but perfectly formed Mediterranean island should be your go-to destination this summer
The Maltese islands, Malta, Gozo and Comino, have a hell of a lot packed into such a
small space – it's just 40 minutes one side to the other on Malta, that's how small we're
talking, and things go at an even slower pace on the smaller islands. There are loads of
wonderful beaches and coves to discover, and the sea is ridiculously blue, so there'll be
no need for filters on your holiday snaps. Comino's Blue Lagoon, which is accurately
named, is a must-see and there are great places to dive around the islands – undersea
caves anyone?
There's also plenty to do on dry land because Malta is the perfect place to get your
history on. The capital is UNESCO world heritage listed and home to St John's Co-
Cathedral, one of the greatest in the whole world. The whole island is full of truly
impressive prehistoric sites, fortresses and fortifications to explore, like the underground
necropolis Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, which is the only known prehistoric underground
temple on the planet. And when you get peckish, you can enjoy a mix of Sicilian and
Middle Eastern flavours cooked up with fresh local produce.
