7 Issue 78 / 2015 travel guestlist.net 23 Forget beaches in the Med or festival fields in Britain, spend your summer in NYC Combining summer holiday with top-notch music is nothing new, but break the mould and venture a little further afield than Ibiza this month. New York may seem out of reach but there are bargains to be had if you travel in high summer - prices are cheaper as the high temperatures put some people off and locals often escape the city on weekends. Summer in the city can sometimes be sticky work but there are some stellar music festivals that'll make the trip well worth you're while. And when you're done with that, you can experience all the delights of one of the best cities in the world, even on a budget. Charlie Parker Jazz Festival – 20th – 22nd August, Marcus Garvey Park and Tompkins Square Park The free celebratory festival saluting the bebop legend "Bird" is back for the 23rd time, and features a range of jazz artists, from upcoming stars to old masters and small bands to big ensembles. Highlights from this year's programme include Oliver Lake's big band, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Joe Lovano and Jeff "Tain" Watts. If you have any connection to jazz at all, this is festival is a must. Afropunk Festival – 21st – 23rd August, Commodore Barry Park, Brooklyn The annual music festival is a celebration of urban culture in all its forms with a genre- spanning line-up. Kelis, Grace Jones, Danny Brown, Kele, Thundercat, MikeQ, Lion Babe, Ms Lauryn Hill, Raury, Kaytranada, Curtis Harding and Lenny Kravitz are just some of the mega names performing at this year's fest. Afropunk After Dark takes over nearby venues in Brooklyn ensuring that the party doesn't stop. Afropunk is not just about music though – there will be author signings as part of education installation Rock-n-Read, the SpinThrift Market and plenty of food trucks and pop-ups. The first annual Afropunk Ball is also being held on the Friday, featuring live music, art and philanthropy, raising funds for the Afropunk Global Initiative, which promotes diversity in media and the arts. Feel the music, free your mind, and join the movement. Verboten StageONE – August 23rd & September 19th, Bushwick Inlet Park The famous Williamsburg club Verboten gets in the summer spirit with event series StageONE. The July date saw Sasha bring his Last Day on Earth party to Brooklyn, and the August party will be headed up by Jamie xx who is out on a world tour with his In Colour album, joined by Maya Jane Coles, Matador, Andhim, Nastia and Bedouin. The final StageONE event is a special edition of Matthew Dear's Subversions residency. Carl Craig brings his live project Modular Pursuits to Williamsburg and Dear will play under his alter ego Audion, with Gaiser, Magda, Floorplan and Moodymann rounding out the impressive bill. And if all that musical goodness wasn't enough, the vibes continue at the afterparties down the road at Verboten. Electric Zoo: Transformed – 4th - 6th September, Randall's Island Park Taking over Labor Day weekend, Electric Zoo are back for their seventh year with another monster line-up. From Amine Edge & DANCE to Zeds Dead, Electric Zoo is literally an A-Z of the hottest artists in electronic music right now. Alongside headliners Above & Beyond, Alesso and The Chemical Brothers, you can catch the likes of Adam Beyer, Claptone, Paco Osuna, The Glitch Mob, Cashmere Cat, Robin Schulz, Hot Since 82, The Martinez Brothers, Jonas Rathsman and Patrick Topping to name but a few. Stepping it up a gear, Electric Zoo also has three specially curated stages – Pete Tong's 'All Gone' arena will feature cutting-edge British artists handpicked by the man himself; Aussie Thomas Jack, who holds close ties with the brightest artists on the tropical house scene, will helm his own stage; and Awakenings, the long-running Dutch techno festival, will make its North American debut with their own area. As Awakenings founder Rocco Veenboer told RA, "The look and feel of the stage will be 100 per cent Awakenings…The Friday will have a stronger techno sound and the Saturday will be more tech house." With 100,000 fans coming to NYC from around the globe, Electric Zoo is the perfect chance to celebrate and connect.
