46 Issue 78 / 2015 guestlist.net artist of the month erykah Badu The world is in pain and the "analog girl in a digital world", Erykah Badu, knows it ones to Watch the age of L.u.n.a Fresh-faced four piece The Age Of L.U.N.A are the voice of the next generation "Live. Under. No. Authority" is the group's motto as well as the title of their debut mixtape, which dropped at the end of July. The Age Of L.U.N.A has an average age of just 19 – singer Daniela is 20, rappers Kyote Noir and Butch Arkas are both 21, and producer NK-OK is just 16 years old! Even in this early stage of their development the group have already amassed support from I.D, Complex Magazine, Noisey, Dj Semtex, Paper Magazine, OK Player, The Guardian, Huck, Huw Stephens, Nemone, Clash Mag, Mista Jam and many others off the back of their first video and single released earlier in the year. Their eclectic infusion of collective influences plays a massive part in the groups sound and approach. 'Memory Lane', the first release off the tape, exemplifies what this young quartet has to offer. Rappers Butch and Kyote find themselves in reflective mood, tracing their steps over paths trodden and roads crossed amongst a slow NK - OK produced head nodder, as Daniela layers a hypnotic honey laced hook that will have you zoning out. Butch has said this on the group's ambitions, "We'd like to move commercial music from where it is now...We want people to love that old school, musical vibe…..We want to bring that back to commercial music and move everyone." With their tape making waves and them selling out their launch party in 24 hours, we'd say they are definitely on the right track. Having disbanded in 2007, the full line-up – Chali 2na, Akil, Zaakir, Mark 7even, DJ Nu-Mark and Cut Chemist – reunited in 2013 for a string of festival dates, before unveiling new material last year in the shape of 'The Way We Do It', produced by Heavy D. The group have also announced the re-release of their debut LP Quality Control in partnership with Get On Down, in two formats. Jurassic 5 are well and truly back. Jurassic 5 The hip-hop crew hit The Forum on September 10th HIPHOP/ RNB In her new mixtape, Ms Badu has "carefully and lovingly selected high frequencies for the soul", from Stevie Wonder and Eddie Kendricks to herself. Badu's soulful vintage jazz, Afro-beat and funk will surely heal any needy soul, just as the Grammy Award winner hopes. Her timing is perfect, as always. With so many social and racial injustices happening around the world, 'Love's In Need Of Love Today'. Ms. Badu's tracklist is symbolic: it starts with a call for knowledge and conscience, moving towards a darker tone, ending with hope and the track 'Someday We'll All Be Free'.
