22 / SEPTEMBER.OCTOBER.2015 RINKMAGAZINE.COM T here's one thing that separates ice arenas from simply skating out on the open pond. No, we're not talking about the heated bleachers or concession stands; we're talking about dasher boards. Dasher boards are one of the most important elements to any facility. Comprised of boards, shielding and netting, their main purpose is to separate the skaters from the fans. They work hard to protect both parties, too. But with constant contact, dasher boards take a beating. Making sure they are functional is important for safety, and helps make your facility look more cosmetically appealing. So where do you begin? Here are a few tips to get you started on prepping your are- na's dasher boards for the upcoming season. WRITE IT DOWN First things first, always (always) create a documented record when working on any part of your arena's systems. By document- ing your inspections and maintenance you can help to protect yourself should any- thing go awry down the road. Look to your dasher board's manufactur- er when beginning your report. They will have all the appropriate information and guidelines you need to know before begin- ning your maintenance and inspection. This may seem basic but it is necessary to define the type of system and the dimensions of the equipment in your facility before creating an inspection report and conducting inspections and maintenance. TAKE A LOOK (DAILY) If you see something, fix it! Visual inspec- tions of the dasher boards should be done daily. Documented dasher board inspec- tions should be conducted on a weekly, monthly and annual basis. If your facility is a multipurpose venue, it will be necessary to perform dasher board inspections on an event-by-event basis. Inspection reports should include inspection items, condition, maintenance actions and an area for addi- tional notes. Recording these items will provide useful information for managers and staff members from each inspection. PHOTOS: COURTESY OF STAR , From a cosmetic standpoint, which rink looks cleaner?
