Risk management Protecting the rink and its patrons 46 / SEPTEMBER.OCTOBER.2015 RINKMAGAZINE.COM U.S. Figure Skating volunteers, officials and staff members on recognizing and reducing circumstances for potential abuse to occur; information on U.S. Figure Skating's required screening and background check program; the availability and procedures for any person to report suspected abuse or misconduct (including protections from any retaliation or repercussions for such reporting); the procedures and means by which U.S. Figure Skating and its member clubs and programs should respond to allegations of abuse and misconduct; and how U.S. Figure Skating and its member clubs and programs will monitor and supervise this program to help ensure its effectiveness. U.S. Figure Skating's SafeSport Program involves several key components: , Policies prohibiting abuse and misconduct , Preventive policies , Monitoring and supervision of SafeSport Program , Education and awareness training , Screening of coaches and select volunteers , Responding to reports of abuse , Reporting concerns of abuse As part of this program, U.S. Figure Skating has implemented policies to address certain types of abuse and misconduct, and to reduce, monitor and govern areas where potential abuse and misconduct could occur. The policies address the following types of abuse and misconduct: , Sexual abuse , Physical abuse , Emotional abuse , Bullying, threats and harassment , Hazing , Willfully tolerating misconduct The SafeSport policies below set forth the boundaries for appropriate and inappropriate conduct and should be implemented to reduce the risks of potential abuse: , Athlete protection and commitment to safety , Two-deep leadership and appropriate supervision , Locker room and changing room policy , Social media, mobile and electronic communications policy , SafeSport travel guidelines , Codes of conduct for skaters, parents, coaches and club board members All U.S. Figure Skating members shall familiarize themselves with each form of abuse and misconduct and shall refrain from engag- ing in such misconduct and/or violating any of these policies. To assist with the implementation of the SafeSport Program, each U.S. Figure Skating member club shall designate a club board member to hold the title of SafeSport Compliance Officer. The specific duties of the SafeSport Compliance Officer includes monitoring the SafeSport policies and procedures of the club; verifying coach compliance; and being the initial contact for persons reporting suspected abuse, misconduct or other violations, compiling information, and when appropriate, reporting such information to U.S. Figure Skating. Every club should have at least three members who have completed the SafeSport Program training course.
