10 | OCTOBER 2015 nshoremag.com When putting this issue together, the editorial team sat down to look at leaders in our community who are making a difference for the better. Our list be- came voluminous within an hour! There are so many amazing people doing amazing work in our region—we had a hard time narrowing down the list. We decided to focus on 10 movers and shakers affiliated with the North Shore from diverse backgrounds. At the top of our list was Governor Charlie Baker. A Swampscott resident for the past 20 years, Governor Baker now sits at the highest level of government in the Commonwealth. In an interview with writer Jeff Harder, Baker reveals some of the lessons he learned along the way and some favorite things about the North Shore. Staying in the political arena, Alexandra Pecci met with Lawrence mayor Dan Rivera. A city that faces incredible challenges—some of the highest rates of crime, drug use, and poverty in the state—Lawrence seems like it can't beat the odds. Where others may see hopelessness, Rivera sees opportunity. By taking small steps, he is transform- ing the city. Another champion for change in Lawrence is Salvatore Lupoli. Owner of Sal's Pizza, Lupoli is much more than a restaurateur. His is a philan- thropist who brought industry back to the mills in Lawrence with his River- walk Properties. Renovating a 46-acre defunct mill complex into a thriving place of commerce has allowed over 200 businesses to occupy the mills. Salem's Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) is among the world-class muse- ums and by no accident. James B. and Mary Lou Hawkes curator Lynda Roscoe Hartigan is at the head of PEM's ambitious curatorial and exhibition program, and she serves as a leader, collaborator, and decision maker. With PEM's collection boasting 1.8 million works, Hartigan tells writer Mary Grau- erholz that she keeps new acquisitions organic and progressive. Along with our Movers & Shakers feature, we also take a look at 5 over 50—five institutions over 50 years old on the North Shore. This was a fun ex- ercise as we asked you to vote for your favorite! Turn to page 164 to see the top five iconic companies—we're not surprised at all by your delicious picks! We finish off the issue with a fashion spread of power dressing. Check out the handsome couple on page 194 and see how local shops dressed them for success. This feature is in perfect sync with our Fashion Affair this October 15.
