34 Issue 80 / 2015 HIPHOP / RNB guestlist.net Last year Killer Mike and El-P joked that for $40,000 they would remix their forthcoming LP using sampled cat sounds. A Kickstarter was born and it raised $65,000, so the boys duly got to work. Although a joke, the record is brilliantly executed - Meow the Jewels features the stylings of Snoop Dogg, Just Blaze, Boots, Massive Attack's 3D and famed Internet cat Lil Bub amongst others. It's available as a free download and special vinyl edition, with the proceeds donated to victims of police brutality. Meow The Jewels, the cat-themed remix of RTJ2, is here Salt-N-PePa This NYC trio broke new ground by becoming one of the best female rap crews in the game Got to break my neck just to get my respect/Go to work and get paid less than a man/When I'm doin' the same damn thing that he can/When I'm aggressive then I'm a bitch/When I got attitude you call me a witch/ Treat me like a sex-object (that ain't smooth)/Underestimate the mind, oh yeah, you're a fool/Weaker sex, yeah, right, that's the joke (ha!)/Have you ever been in labor? I don't think so, nope/I'm a genuine feminine female thang" – Ain't Nothing but a She Thing The legendary trio from Queens, New York - Cheryl James, Sandra Denton, and Deidra Rope - formed one of the first and most well-known female rap crews, Salt-N-Pepa. At the time women in hip-hop were primarily associated with male crews. There were demands of feminism and equality but a majority of female rappers chose to adapt the masculine self-presentation. But Salt-N-Pepa embraced their "femininity" and wanted to be recognised for it. They empowered women by speaking about embracing their beauty, protecting and owning their sexuality, gender equality and by rapping about social issues such as HIV/AIDS. As well as tackling important issues, the group was also extremely succesful - they won three MTV VMA Awards, one BET Award and a Grammy Award for 'None Of Your Business', making them the first female rap Grammy winners. More @ guestlist.net/rnb-hiphop Less than a month after releasing the debut Grizzly Gato album While You Were Sleeping, the group waxes poetic with Sandman kicking things off on 'Finding A New Balance On A Boogieboard' with a frantic signature verse "seen a brother get stomped out on the 7 train Queens, next morning woke up with blood stained jeans, was that a dream?" Each member of the Grizzly Gato beast delivers visual verses of their own based on idiosyncrasies. Production is handled by Grizzly Grimace and the results are a very dope listen. track of the MoNth Grizzly Gato - 'fiNdiNG a New BalaNce oN a BooGieBoard' New York rap duo Grizzly Gato link up with Homeboy Sandman Alright With Me Wretch 32 ft.
