The collaboration was initiated by the White House, who wanted a new way to get the US public involved in fundraising for the Syrian refugee crisis. It is estimated that in five years over 11 million people have been displaced due to the conflict. A special Kickstarter page was activated for a weeklong fundraising campaign, with all proceeds going to USA for UNHCR. With this project all donations were collected as soon as they were made, multiple donations were allowed, there was no funding goal, and the company themselves were donating their usual 5% fee. This campaign was also special because Kickstarter normally focus on creative projects. As CEO Yancey Strickler said: "This is not something that we have ever done before. We have always kept the platform focused strictly on creative projects. But in this instance, it's a call from the White House. And feeling, like a lot of people, overwhelmed by the immensity of this situation, we felt compelled to act, and felt like if our product could provide any path forward for the people, we should do that." At the time of writing, with 12 hours left on the clock, $1,666,800 had been contributed – enough to provide immediate necessities and a place to sleep for over 5000 people. Although it has been a US-focused charity drive, this campaign does represent a breakthrough in donations for Syria. Having such a huge organisation get behind the cause has raised awareness amongst a different audience than would normally support refugee causes. Hopefully it will inspire more companies and more individuals across the world to help in whatever way they can. 6 Issue 80 / 2015 GUESTLIST guestlist.net Spending Money The crowdfunding website has paired with UNHCR to raise money for humanitarian relief KicKStarter raiSing Money for Syrian refugeeS Guestlist's very own Nelly Haycock takes on the charitable challenge It's not only celebrities who are taking on the Spending Money Challenge, some of the Guestlist team are also stepping up to the plate. As you know, the Spending Money Challenge is all about making us more aware of consumerism. We spend so much money on things we don't really need when that cash could really make a difference in someone's life. So you take the same amount of money that you spent on something non-essential, give the same amount away to a charity or good cause of your choice, and then keep the cycle going by nominating others to do the same. After spending £16 on beers, Nelly donated the same amount to the homeless charity Shelter. Thanks to the support of people like Nelly, Shelter can answer calls for help from thousands of families in need, providing them with the support they need to find a safe, comfortable home to call their own.
