24 Issue 81 / 2015 HOUSE/ TECHNO guestlist.net The innovative Berlin-born producer is riding high with another strong double single News Carl Cox to eNd his reigN iN ibiza Carl Cox has firmly placed himself among Ibiza's elite class, bringing the finest house and techno to a packed out Space each Tuesday. He will be remembered for 15 years of the most cutting edge music and incredible line- ups on the White Isle. It is quite simply the end of an era. His decision to call time was swiftly followed by the news that Ushuaia will take control of Space from 2017 - read into that what you will. Cox will continue as normal next season with 15 events planned to go ahead at Space. Each are said to have 'very special line- ups' so if you haven't experienced one of Ibiza's premier club events, time's running out! Cox is ending his residency at Space Ibiza next summer after 15 years of dominating the island Ballerino, aka Robin Paul Braum, follows up the excellent 'Love'/'Concentrate' with 'Wet'/'Coward'. Using his favoured double single format, Ballerino explores the themes of desperate and embarrassing crushes, and the concept of unwanted and illusional love at first sight, and instead of relying on lyrics, he uses production to tell the narrative. The A-side 'Wet' exemplifies trademark silky and tactile sound, whilst 'Coward' on the B-side is a further example of Ballerino's innovative approach to electronic music, paying a subtle homage to the 80s origins of house with an entrancing synth layer which ebbs and flows above a muffled looping bassline. To celebrate the release, he had the honour of hosting the first ever live gig at Dalston Superstore back in October. As a founding member of South London artist collective squareglass, Ballerino has even more cause to celebrate this month, as they appraoch their one year anniversary. The label, known as a home for new and unconventional artists, has spent the last year challenging the boundaries between song-writing, DJ practice and sound art, and has become one of the most exciting imprints in the capital. The anniversary will be celebrated with the release of a boutique, limited edition series of square vinyl, including Ballerino's syrupy 'Love' and a special show at Birthdays on 1st December, with Ballerino and Bunki performing alongside label- friends Emperor Yes! and Tryptych. The night paves the way for the exciting prospect of squareglass' bi-monthly residency at the venue, which will begin in 2016 in collaboration with VICE.
