Issue 37 / MAR-APR 2012 SUCCESS STORIES ALEX RAWLINGS: THE UK'S BEST LINGUIST Oxford University student wins a national competition with his mastery of foreign languages Alex Rawlings may look like an average British student but when it comes to conversation you realise his exceptional skill. Start talking to him in English, Greek, German, Spanish, Rus- sian, Dutch, Afrikaans, French, Hebrew, Catalan or Italian and he'll respond appropriately with- out hesitation. Emerging as win- ner of a national competition run by publishers Collins in pursuit of the UK's most multi-lingual student, Alex was up against students aged 16-22 from across the UK. Currently an undergrad at Oxford, Alex says he's har- boured a passion for languages since a young age. After a trip to Holland at 14, he decided to learn Dutch with books and CDs. From there he began to consume new languages at a rapid rate. Alex says the next language on his list is Arabic because he thinks it's a beautiful language. LOOKING TO THE FUTUREVERSITY Futureversity is a youth led organisation based in London Boroughs, such as The Tower Hamlets. Its aim is to bring out the most potential as possible stating on its website that it aspires 'to open doors for young people through unconventional learning and innovative partner- ships'. It's been around since 1995 and has gotten bigger and bigger since then. It offers courses for people between the ages of 11-25, ranging from First Aid, to Photography and even courses that can help to boost people's confidence in skills that will help them in later life aspects such as, employment and univer- sity. It has many patrons, such as Children In Need and even The Bank of America; and also has support from celebrities such as Dizzee Rascal who said only a few days ago that Futureversity is helping to change the harmful stereotypes of kids in London only being known for living on a 'council estate where everyone is selling drugs, or everyone robs' and adds that kids genuinely just want to 'make something of their lives'. If you are interested in what Futureversity is doing, or even if you are under 25 and want to enrol in a course and get involved, then http://www.futureversity.org/ AMY LIVES ON THE GUESTLIST NETWORK HOW TO GUIDE! HOW TO BLAG YOUR WAY INTO A CLUB Do a Jip Say you're a journalist from Mixmag, here to interview the club's owner (who happens to be Carl Cox!). If you make it out alive, you're definitely a supreme blagger. Sleep with a bouncer If you get your leg over, you'll have your foot in the door. Knock out a bouncer Bouncers are generally built like brick shithouses, so this could be a less appealing option for most prospective blaggers. But generally a swift uppercut to the jaw should be enough to make him see stars so you can run into the mass of the crowd. Bide your time Speed and finesse is vital here. Wait for the bouncer to turn his back – perhaps even get a friend to distract him by shouting 'Oi meathead!' – and slip around him or carefully jump through his legs. Pretend you're a DJ Carry an empty record bag or CD case and bowl through like you own the place. If the bouncer has any objections, tell him you're paying his wages tonight and threaten to fetch the manager. Pretend you're CID Flash your oyster card and hope for the best... THE AMY WINEHOUSE FOUNDATION The Amy Winehouse Foundation, which was set-up by the singer's dad to help support worthy causes, has helped save a young person's home- less shelter from closing down. A grant of £5000 from the singer's legacy has helped keep Crash Pad running. The initiative which helps young people struggling with drink and drug addictions, impressed Amy's father, Mitch Winehouse, so much that he decided to present the grant money check himself. So far The Amy Winehouse Founda- tion has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for good causes. Final Amy Winehouse clothing collection for Fred Perry Since we're talking about Amy, it seems apt to mention her final clothing collaboration with Fred Perry. Before her tragic death, the iconic singer had worked on collections for Fred Perry. This new collection for Spring/Summer 2012 will be the final one from Amy. A spokesperson for Fred Perry said the collection would reflect "Amy's love of Fifties Americana and Art Deco Miami, the collection features an exclusive print scattered with Cadillac's, juke boxes and cat's eye sunglasses in a palette of pink mist, pale blue and black." All proceeds from sales of the col- lection will be donated to The Amy Winehouse Foundation. You don't need to give us a reason to shop but supporting our girl Amy is all the more reason to splash the cash. THE GUESTLIST NETWORK www.guestlist.net 13 AMY WINEHOUSE NEWS
