Issue 37 / MAR-APR 2012 www.guestlist.net TRAVEL 21 THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED All that winter comfort food has led our bodies seriously astray and, with summer around the corner, it's time to start thinking about exercising out those lumps. But it needn't be gruelling. Why not get fit and travel all at the same time? Here are three of the world's best cycling destinations. Holland Western Mainland Europe is generally set up with the cyclist in mind, Holland in particular. For a start, it's pretty much flat, thus avoiding the constant battle with gravity. Add to this the separate cycle lanes that follow most major roads, the signposted routes that criss-cross the country and the abundance of quality campsites, and there you have it: the perfect cycling holiday. And being only an hour's flight from the UK, it's pretty much on your doorstep. For more information and to plan routes visit: http://holland.cyclingaroundtheworld.nl/ National Highway 1, Vietnam Running North-South along the entire length of the country for 2,300 km, National Highway 1 takes in some of Vietnam's most spectacular coastline and scenery. There are a couple of very meaty hills—most notably the Hai Van Pass at 498 m above sea level—but it's well worth the pain. This really is one of the most visually stunning routes in the world, and what better way to escape the over-trodden backpacker trail and immerse yourself into a foreign culture than by bike. For more information visit: http://indotrek.com/en/ Wellington, New Zealand New Zealand is home to some of the world's most spectacular natural wonders, and Wellington on the North Island is perfectly situated for the cyclist. As any 'Lord of the Rings' geek will know, these were the landscapes chosen to represent Middle Earth in the feature film. Es- pecially popular is the ride to the top of Makara Peak, which attracts around 100,000 cyclists every year, all of whom flock to soak up the awesome views of the South Island from the summit.
