Issue 37 / MAR-APR 2012 Goth Trad ARTIST OF THE MONTH DnB / DUBSTEP / BREAKS 41 www.guestlist.net ALBUM REVIEW Japanese dubstep makes itself heard over here in the genre's founding city. In most ways, the culture of Japan couldn't stand further afield from South London's grimey, urban persona, yet this DJ and producer has managed to merge the two together. Like many original dubstep producers, Goth Trad's influences are firmly rooted in grime. His style evolved into dubstep back in 2006. He integrated himself well into the UK scene, with his sounds praised and is also signed to Deep Medi: a sign that we were right to appreciate the music this man has to offer. Even though it's been out for a year and a half now, 'Babylon Fall' is a good place to start if you're new to Goth Trad, with roots vocalist samples expressing unity against the system over a warm bass. Even from the other side of the world, we can see Goth Trad standing up for an original, thoughtful and deep style of bass music that we shouldn't be letting slip behind any Skrillex-shaped shadows. BURIAL - KINDRED EP Nearly five years after the release of his highly acclaimed and awarded album Untrue, William Bevan (AKA Burial) prepares us for what he has in store in his newly released EP, Kindred. This formerly anony- mous producer has once again delivered an eerie masterpiece tying together UK genres old and new. The cut and paste garage beats which underline the reverberating atmospheric synths and voices throughout the EP make Kindred a dream to listen to. Kindred opens in the midst of a rainstorm, after a long and overpowering night of fun and party, but not long be- fore breaking into the groove of Burial's unmatched drum beats and deep bass loops which keep the groove aggressive and steady whilst the angelic voice that swoops in erases all signs of dissonance and sends you tumbling down the rabbit hole on a fantastical aural dream of nostalgia, mourning, loss and awakening. Kindred is epic in all senses of the word. Its opening track 'Kindred' is a 12-minute MARCH RELEASES TROLLEY SNATCHA Subtext EP (DUB POLICE RECORDS) DOWNLINK Party Alarm (ROTTEN RECORDINGS) MIND VORTEX Hotbox (RAM RECORDS) B.RIDDIM (in)theory EP (THIRD EAR) VARIOUS ARTIST'S Feed Me's Escape From Electric Mountain (MAU5TRAP) TUNNIDGE Aftershock (CHESTPLATE) symphony which is the most recognizable track to die- hard Burial fans featuring the same clanking metal-on-metal garage skip-and-swing beats present in Burial's previous re- cordings. The B-side on the EP acts as the mediator between track one and the mammoth fi- nal track 'Ashtray Wasp' which, again, plunges the listener into an 11-minute surreal and perverted nostalgic beat which lends its chemical fatalism to the heroic sense of momentum found in prog-house classics, moving and moving and never getting anywhere the same empty, desperate silence that swallowed 'Kindred'. Think 'Paranoid Android' with 'Dark Side of the Moon' and Four Tet's 'Everything Ecstatic' and you get Burial's Kindred EP. After an impressive streak of successive albums and EP's it seems covetous to have yet another masterpiece up for acclaim. But with Kindred being Burial's most ambitious release since Untrue, this EP is bound to shake and rattle every dance floor it is played on.
