44 INDIE / ROCK www.guestlist.net Sharon Van Etten 'Tramp' ALBUM OF THE MONTH GUESTLIST Issue 37 / MAR-APR 2012 RECOMMENDS BORN BLONDE The Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter is back with a powerful third album, which is definitely worth a listen. Sharon Van Etten's powerful yet vulnerable voice first gained attention when she featured on the Antler's debut, 'Hospice' and went on to release her debut album 'Because I Was in Love'. She was then brought further into the indie limelight by The National's Aaron Dessner, who produced the entirety of 'Tramp' in his garage Despite the clichés of a dif- ficult second album Etten's second release 'Tramp' fully captures the emotional range of her songwriting output in a way that her first album does not quite reach. 'Tramp' is both powerful and melodramatic, but never steps over into bombast. Having The National's guitar- ist on board as a producer has certainly helped. Van Etten's soaring West-Coast guitar is minimalistic, com- plementing her vocals and songwriting abilities without detracting from them. With such sparse instrumenta- tion, she does well to convey emotion through the pure intensity of her voice. Sharon Van Etten's album is out now on Jagjaguwar Records. Verve-esque is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear Born Blonde, not helped by the fact that their lead singer, Arthur Delaney, looks eerily like Richard Ashcroft! While there are undoubtedly similarities, Born Blonde have a sound all of their own. Their music is trippy, melodic rock and is extremely atmospheric where you can simply get lost in your own thoughts. Their EP 'Radio Bliss' is an example of their music mastery and along with their recent live sets, which has wet our musical pallets, EVENT PREVIEW Pulp live 31st March @ Royal Albert Hall we can't wait to get a taste of what is to come.
