46 INDIE / ROCK www.guestlist.net Issue 37 / MAR-APR 2012 GUESTLIST RECOMMENDS TOP 10 SCOTT MCFARNON After years of writing songs for the likes of Beyonce, John Legend and Mark Ronson, singer-songwriter Scott McFarnon has finally decided to embark on a solo career. And about time too! Born and raised right here in South East London, Scott McFarnon has always done things his own way. And since teaching himself to play guitar at the age of 15, not much has changed. Over the last decade, he's forged his way into the music industry on his own terms, eschewing record labels for the ability to retain creative control. "I think everyone should be the person they want to be, and that's what I'm trying to do," says McFarnon. In the process, he's made a serious mark on Hollywood, writing songs for industry heavy-weights and even garnering a Golden Globe and a Grammy nomina- tion for Beyonce's performance of his song 'Once in a Lifetime', in 2008's 'Cadillac Records'. His latest endeavor however has been his solo career: this spring touring Los Angeles and the UK, performing his own tracks and along the way garnering quite a following including us. After listening to his soaring vocals and haunting guitar patterns, it's easy to see why. Our favorite track? 'Red'. And no, we're not talking about the cringe- worthy Daniel Merriweather performance from a few years back, but rather the kind of deeply soulful rendition that can only be performed by the person who actually wrote the song -- and that's exactly who McFarnon is. So what's next for this up-and-coming artist? Hanging out with his two kids at home and finishing up his first album, set for release later this year.
