STARRINKS.COM JANUARY.FEBRUARY.2016 / 17 "For the adult hockey league, we were hoping for three divisions of four teams. We weren't even expecting to have an advanced league. Our advanced league is now our biggest league. We have a total of 18 teams. We had to turn a couple of teams away because we were so full. It's exceeded every expectation. "Figure skating is doing really well here and also seems to be growing. Because we're a newer location, we have a lot more in the younger group. But we do have some local figure skaters that come out, too." Another factor working in Ice in Paradise's favor is the jolt of having a home facility for the club hockey program at the University of California-Santa Barbara. "UCSB has a club team here," Dugan said. "This is their first year here. They played one year before, much farther away. Having their own home rink, they had a lot of people at tryouts and have a great team this year. Whenever they play, the stands are packed." Located just down the street from Ice in Paradise, UCSB will enroll more than 23,000 students for the 2015–16 school year. The school's club team was established in 2009 and plays in the National Collegiate Hockey Association's Southwestern League. Just like every other tenant of Ice in Paradise, UCSB's squad had to make the commute to Oxnard two to three times a week for practices and games before the rink was moved minutes within the campus. The Community's Rink The biggest beneficiaries of Ice in Paradise remain the community. Members are invited and encouraged to become a part of the facility through numerous donor programs. One such program is the Buy- a-Brick program. Donors can purchase standard-size bricks priced at $500, or larger bricks priced at $1,500, and person- alize them. Bricks are then installed in the outdoor Donor Park. Donor plaques also decorate the walls throughout the entire facility, recognizing numerous benefactors. The community's generous support ensures that, after a 30-year dry spell, the city of Santa Barbara will continue to have ice in paradise.
