SYRIAN REFUGEES HELPING WITH FLOODS HOW MANY HOURS ARE YOU WORKING? SMART WATCH FOR THE BLIND Following the devastating floods in Cumbria this winter, a group of Syrian refugees, in true British style, decided to pitch in and help their neighbours. Members of the Rethink Rebuild Soci- ety based in Manchester travelled to Rochdale to aid in local flood preven- tion efforts. The refugees said that they wanted to "repay the kindness shown to them since they have been in the country". Inspired by a blind classmate, Wash- ington University student Eric Ju Woon Kim, invented a smart braille device. His smartwatch has raising pins on its face that create four braille characters at a time, allowing the blind to read texts and other messages. The device is trickier to use regarding longer piec- es of writing so his company Dot Inc plan to create a 'Dot Pad' which will be released in 2017. The average worker in the United Kingdom slogs their way through eight hours of work each day, but in Sweden the government have made moves to decrease the country's workload to a more manageable six hours a day. The reason? A happy workforce, is a pro- ductive workforce. GOOD NEWS 4 Issue 83 / 2016 GUESTLIST guestlist.net KILL THE HOUSING BILL On the 30th of this month, hundreds will march from the Imperial War Museum to Downing Street in protest of the impending passing of the Housing Bill, which would mark the end of social housing. Party and fundraise at the same time at the end of this month On the 30th of this month, hundreds will march from the Imperial War Museum to Downing Street in protest of the impending passing of the Housing Bill, which would mark the end of social housing. The March Against the Housing Bill is hosted by Lambeth Housing Activists. The bill scraps lifetime tenancies and shortens council tenancies to 2 to 5 years, eradicating tenants' right to pass them onto their children. The bill states that if households start to earn above £40,000 – a couple on the living wage – they will have to pay a 'pay-to-stay' tax for the difference between their social rent and the market rent, which could be over half their income. The event, starting at 12pm and ending at 2pm, has over 900 attending on Facebook but will rely on turnout on the day to put its message across. Contact lambethhousingactivists@gmail.com or 07834 828292 to get involved. The Southwark Rooms in London Bridge will be hosting the first Beats4Bags event on January 29. All proceeds from the event will go towards sleeping bags for London's homeless, with the aim to raise £1500 to buy 100 good quality sleeping bags. The line-up features Clive Henry, Rufus b2b Leroy Roberts, Ashleigh Deniro b2b Manio b2b Chrissy Hope, Mr Shiver b2b Joe Le Groove b2b Gabbi Lopez, Ben Prince b2b Rob Perry, El Prevost and Robson b2b Oliver Morris.
