Oddisee has remained a relatively underground artist
on the hip-hop scene, despite boasting an impressive
discography of around 17 albums in the last 10 years.
He's an emcee/producer with a profound message,
intelligent lyricism and increadibly crisp and clear beats.
His latest album The Good Fight is his most 'commercial'
but doesn't sound it at all. He manages to create
beautiful music, which draws from a range of different
genres leaning most heavily on boom-bap and lounge/
jazz.
The most impressive aspect of his music is the genuine
musicality of it. In an era where music, particularly
hip-hop, has become grotesquely homogenised and
commercial, Oddisee is a breath of fresh air.
Songs such as 'Contradiction's Maze' are easy to
listen to and catchy but still retain meaningful lyrics.
Another element that we commend Oddisee on is
his use of irregular time signatures on songs like
'Counter Clockwise', which offer a very different sonic
experience to conventional hip-hop. His music is simply
that; it's music, in every sense of the word. He combines
beautifully composed instrumentals with articulate
lyricism to achieve something truly new and varied.
We would recommend The Good Fight to anybody who
has grown tired of the conventions of modern music
and wants to get back to the essence of hip-hop, music
that has a message but is a pleasure to listen to. If you
love good music, hip-hop or otherwise, give this a go.
We think this incredible album may have been missed by a
few of you!
