44 INDIE / ROCK guestlist.net Issue 83 / 2016 Raised in Florida and currently residing in Brooklyn, Tonstartssbandht, (roughly pronounced ton-starts-bandit) have built up a colossal body of work since they started out in 2008, mostly composed of sprawling, shoegazey soundscapes, masterminded by tight compositions. Brothers Andy and Edwin White jam in the studio and on stage in a wide variety of styles, switching between heavy guitar shredding and gentle, dreamy electronic arrangements. It's their ability to draw disparate traditions into a cohesive sound that sets them apart, along with their penchant for releasing material on limited edition cassettes. ARTIST OF THE MONTH TONSTARTSSBANDHT Watch Brooklyn's Tonstartssbandht for visceral, experimental sounds Their debut album, Everything Forever, written over the last two years at an abandoned steel works in Digbeth, and recorded in the damp basement of an old whistle factory in the depths of the city's industrial Northern quarter, fully embraces darker sounds and subjects. But with lyrics that often touch on matters of love, loss, and loneliness, this is a record born from hope and escapism. Stand out pop tracks such as 'Bloom', 'Up' and 'Poles Apart' showcase the band at their most danceable, with big chorus hooks and machine beats, whereas 'Sirens' and 'Future Gold' both see Victories at Sea explore more intricate musicianship and atmospheric soundscapes that build through layers of impressive electronics and heavily effected guitars. Having already secured new fans by supporting Editors on tour back in October, Victories at Sea are looking to the future, one that far surpasses that of their humble industrial roots. They have toured disco-noir extensively in the UK and Europe, and are back live in London on January 22nd at Tooting Tram & Social, for their first headline slot south of the river. With Louis Bartle and Justin Harris replacing Gordon Moakes and Matt Tong, Bloc Party hope to be making back to the top. With their fifth album Hymns dropping next January, the band are on tour for the next month or two showcasing their new sound. Mixing in some old classics, Bloc Party are looking to introduce a more techno sound to their music with tracks such as 'The Love Within'. Your first chance to catch a glimpse of the reconfigured band will be at St John's in Hackney Church on 4th December, before they start a few European dates and finally return back to England early next year.
