50 REGGAE / DANCE HALL guestlist.net Issue 83 / 2016 The event has been hugely successful, raising millions of dollars, with all proceeds going to the Bustamante Charity Hospital - the only children's hospital on the island. The 2016 showcase held at Jamaica House, Kingston was to be no exception to the success of previous years. Shaggy himself, Sean Kingston, Ashanti, OMI, En Vogue and Beenie Man were just some of the many entertainers who took to the stage in the name of charity. Shaggy has got on board many artists who are not only huge names, but have a real passion for Jamaica, people who really care about the children living on the island and the concert is now a huge event in the Jamaican music calendar. NEWS SHAGGY & FRIENDS ARE A HIT Established in 2009, 'Shaggy and Friends' is a charity concert that occurs every two years On-U Sound have reissued four classic albums from the mighty African Head Charge all at the same time. The groundbreaking debut album from 1981 is built upon sparse backing tracks constructed by Adrian Sherwood. The producer invited Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah to lay down hand percussion patterns and breaks on top, augmented by stereo-strafed effects and the occasional burst of Sun Ra-style horns. The result is a unique mixture of traditional African rhythms, dub and free jazz. Environmental Studies saw African Head Charge working manipulated and vari-speeded 1/4 inch tape loops that were re-recorded back to the multi-track, soaked in reverb and delay, and then applied to the performances of the musicians, not to mention extensive use of found sounds and field recordings, hence the title. Drastic Season has loose echoes of traditional African percussion music, field recordings and roots reggae inform the mix, whilst some parts conjure up the stripped-back post- rock of Can or Tortoise. And released in 1986, Off The Beaten Track still sounds forward thinking, forging a new middle ground between dub and electronic music. Programmed chants and unexpected sounds are dropped onto a fluid rhythmic bed. A landmark recording in the integration of sampling technology and live instrumentation.
