8 | APRIL 2016 Driving out to my friend Leslie Novak's house on Plum Island, I slow down to a crawl as I come upon the Pink House. Its haunting beauty in the middle of the coastal landscape is arresting—conjuring up all kinds of romantic notions about this 91-year-old house surrounded by acres of marshland. It has become part of the scenic expression of the island—a symbol that you know you have arrived somewhere special, even magical. Jeanne O'Brien Coffey describes in-depth the fate of the Pink House—a story that even The New York Times has picked up—which is now owned by the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. The organization has proposed possibly razing the house and turning the parcel back to its natural state. A group of citizens (Save the Newbury Pink House, Inc.) as enamored with the pink house as I am is trying to preserve the building. Turn to page 150 for the full story. In this issue focusing on the North Shore's arts, culture, and fashion scenes, we also head to the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) for our fashion shoot. PEM's collection becomes the perfect backdrop for spring looks. An artistic force in our community, PEM plans to break ground this year on its renovation and expansion project, which will include the 40,000-square- foot new wing of galleries, as well as the 80,000-square-foot Collection Stewardship Center for the storage and conservation of artworks—causing PEM to rank as one of the top 20 art museums in the country. These two features prompted debate over which one should be our cover story, so we decided to run both covers in April—PEM's fashion feature and the Pink House. We'd love to hear which is your favorite cover.
