I started out in what turned out to be a relatively modest position with my backside sticking out in the air. As I came to terms with this situation she tapped me and indicated, in a curt tone, "Face forward!" With that I fl ung away my dignity and turned to face the world. Being scrubbed is a ticklish feeling, and you may experience some discomfort depending on your skin's sensitivity. It's like being licked by a puppy's tongue or having fi ne sandpaper rubbed all over your body. The scratchy yellow rag Jessica rubbed me down with did start to sting a bit and my stomach eventually turned the color of cooked lobster. It might be a bit rough, but I wouldn't call it painful, and the result—baby soft skin—is well worth the rub. Between rounds of vigorous scrubbing, I was doused with warm water (a welcome relief from the scrubbing) to wash off my dead skin, fl ecks of which soon began to cover the pink plastic-covered table. It was slightly alarming but clearly a much needed fresh start from my expired dermis. After the full body scrub, Jessica motioned for me to reposition myself for a quick head massage complete with a similarly effi cient shampoo and condition. Then, she presented me with a white envelope with her name on it and asked me to come back with a tip before I left for the day (Insider tip: Bring cash and stash it in your locker.). I even received a souvenir of my experience—the yellow scrubby from my earlier industrial strength exfoliation. I left the spa reveling in my newly scrubbed feeling and confi dent I'd shed a pound or two of skin. I didn't notice any immediate results in my appearance other than the fatigue showing on my face from an afternoon of relaxation—it turns out that a day at the spa can be quite exhausting. But, when I woke up the next morning at 6 a.m. with plenty of energy before my daily (usually mandatory) caffeine intake, I noticed that even without benefi t of a tropical vacation, my skin had a glow to it and my eyes didn't have the usual dark circles and puffi ness underneath them. Though the soothing music, plush robe and cucumber water were missing, the healing hot waters of the bath and the scrub had worked wonders, making any ounce of sacrifi ce or potential awkwardness endured worth it—all in the name of beauty, indeed. Like a deer in the headlights, I sat in the hot bath while I detoxed along with my bath-mates, anxiously waiting for my number to be called. WARREN C.
