"His Holiness Pope Francis was shoc- ked and profoundly saddened to learn of the killing of four Missionaries of Charity and 12 others at a home for the elderly in Aden," read a telegram signed by Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin. The sisters were among at least 16 people killed after two gunmen attacked a Mis- sionaries of Charity convent and nursing home for the elderly and disabled in the provisional§ capitol§ of Yemen. They have been identifi ed by the Apostolic Vicariate of Southern Arabia as Sister Anselm from India, Sister Margherite from Rwanda, Sister Reginette from Rwanda, and Sister Judith from Kenya. The convent's§ supe- rior§is unharmed and in police custody, the vicariate stated.§ Bishop Paul Hinder, who oversees the area where the sisters were killed, said he has "no doubt" the sisters died as martyrs. "For me there is no doubt that the sis- ters have been victims of hatred – hatred against our faith," Bishop Hinder said.§ "The Missionaries of Charity died as martyrs: as martyrs of charity, as martyrs because they witnessed Christ and shared the lot of Jesus on the Cross." Yemen in in the midst of a civil war that began in March 2015. Houthi rebels, who are Shia Muslims, took over portions of the country seeking to out the Sunni-led gover- nment. Both al-Quaeda and the Islamic State have set up strongholds in the country. According to the Associated Press, the gunmen gained entry by telling the gate- keeper that their mothers were residents. They immediately shot dead the gatekee- per and started shooting randomly. The victims were found handcu¬ ed and shot in the head. Pope Francis has condemned this "dia- bolical violence." According to Cardinal Parolin, the Pope, "§sends§the assurance of his prayers for the dead and his spiritual closeness to their families and to all a¬ ected from this act of senseless and diabolical violence... He§prays§that this pointless slaughter will awaken consciences, lead to a change of heart, and inspire all parties to lay down their arms and take up the path of dialo- gue."§SOURCE: CATHOLIC NEWS AGENCY Four Missionaries of Charity killed, described as'martyrs' Missionaries of Charity at a prayer vigil in St. Peter's Square, June 19, 2015.
