More and more these days, large cities are becoming the centre of cultural production in all forms. Not only is culture produced, sold and consumed there, but they are also the locations where culture and creativity originate from. A new documentary film festival entitled, "Frames of Representation" is coming to the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) between April 20th-27th and will be raising both questions and answers to the many issues presented in modern, cultural society, mainly; With the many obstacles faced in today's society, will cities continue to be a major influence for filmmakers? In addition to looking at documentaries as an ever changing art form, the curators' stated aim is to, "focus on the idea of the 'New Periphery,' and cinema's role in bringing the excluded and elsewhere to the centre of the conversation." The documentaries shown at the film festival will look at themes such as communal violence, abandonment, isolation and urban abjection amongst others. The films will evoke new forms of contemporary living. Two films in particular, "The Other Side" and, "Fragment 53" will look at tribalism, war and the distressing effects that they have on social circles and communities as well as the physical and mental effects on individuals. The stories which they depict are from different viewpoints and ideologies. Yet both films clearly portray social collapse which in turn further drives the wars that destroyed them in the first place. The Other Side takes a look into war veterans and social misfits who feel threatened by the very nation which they fought for, showing that the state does not provide them with something that the armed militia offers, a sense of belonging and conformity. Fragment 53 provides a contrasting look at the dedication and enthusiasm of the militiamen who are portrayed in, "The Other Side," which the director frames with a strong sense of detachment. Compiled entirely of interviews from former soldiers, Fragment 53 gives us an in-depth look into the ethical black hole which came to be as a result of the tribal wars which took place in Liberia. The people shown in the film convey a completely damaged moral structure, one which they've had no choice but to adopt in order to make sense of a senseless war. This is apparent throughout the film, bypassing the causes of war and emphasising more on the casualties and other effects caused by war. The aim of the company is to support emerging talent and new voices, help them develop and make original content. With focus on female filmmakers and filmmakers from underrepresented backgrounds, Pia Getty is also joined by producer James Durrant and director Johnny Kenton who are also supporters and enthusiastic about helping the arts and new voices. The company offers a number of awards including the Pia Pressure Award which gives participants the opportunity to receive support and funding from investors. Each winning team will receive up to £25,000 in order to help fund their project. Pia Pressure is hoping that the winner of the award will become life peers along with their joining Pia Pressure's network. In addition to this, they will have some teaching opportunities for first timers.
