GUESTLIST 2016 / ISSUE 86 23 TRAVEL A large and diverse country, Iran has everything from arid deserts to lush forests and steppes, to rugged mountains and calm beaches. Alongside the natural beauty, Iran also has many manmade features that'll leave you in awe. Chehel Sotoun (literally translating to Forty Columns) for example, is a pavilion with twenty columns at the entrance which then reflect in the pool just outside the pavilion, making it forty is a great site to go to for anyone visiting. Iran's history is deep and rich, as is its culture, with some of the world's greatest ancient sites in Persepolis. There are plenty of sites, historical and other for all people, The Tomb of Hafez for example, with its memorial hall pay tribute to celebrated poet who has influenced the world, including the West in many forms of art, music, intellect and ideologies. In addition to this, Iran's people are friendly and hospitable, always curious about the outside world and any foreigners to come to visit, coupled with the intricate etiquette system of Taarof sees that all guests are welcome, no matter where they come from. The celebrations are also kick ass; Nowruz marks the beginning of a new year for Iranian People as well as the first day of spring. Taking place on the 20th March, the people of Iran go out into the streets in a two week celebration, one prior to and one after the New Year. Including pastries and drinks handed out to the public, gift giving, music and fire jumping, it's definitely something to be a part of. For those of you who like to have an adventure and get a little wild, you're in luck, from midnight fishing to mountain climbing, to waking up by the river and going for a swim in the heat of the summer, Iran has it all with few restrictions. And if none of that convinces you to visit Iran, then maybe the cuisine will. With a wide range of different foods, drinks and pastries to try, there are many regions in Iran with some unique foods to give your taste buds a flavour of what Iran is really about. Given the bad reputation Iran has in the Western media, most people might not ever think of travelling there, but it is in fact one of the best kept secret travel destinations in the world.
