SIDEWALL have reinforced sidewalls to prevent punctures and blow- outs and feature larger side lugs for greater traction. Most mud-terrain tires also don't have siping on the tread lugs to prevent them from moving under extreme conditions. So this reduces some of their capabilities in the wet and in icy conditions. CONSTRUCTION: TREAD PATTERNS While an aggressive tread pattern on a tire can make your truck look menacing, there are some things that you should know about why tread patterns are important in your selection of tires. Aggressive patterns are made to fling mud and rocks away from the tire. This is why the tread lugs are spaced so widely apart. As tread lugs get closer together, their ability to collect mud and rocks between the lugs limits traction if they get compacted into the tire. Over the years, tread patterns have changed dramatically, so that many mud-terrain tires now offer significantly reduced noise and greater tread life than before. SIPING Siping are the small thin grooves that are cut into the tread lugs (or blocks). Siping gives the tread additional traction on wet and ice and dissipate heat more effectively from the tire. Siping on aggressive tread designs makes for a good all-around aggressive tire that performs well on the street and off- road. But siping can also cause the tread block to squirm or move, reducing traction during critical moments of adhesion in extreme conditions. This is one of the reasons why you don't often see any siping on off- road race tires, as they require maximum traction at all times. SIDEWALL Lots of technology has come into off-road tires over the years. Some of the most significant advancements have come from the use of Kevlar and sidewall construction, which increases the strength of the tire against punctures, while also reducing weight.
