20 APRIL 23-MAY 13, 2016 | DENVER CATHOLIC Young Catholic princesses taught about their inherent dignity at retreat St. Peter Catholic Church in Gree- ley held a retreat for young women aged 5 to 18, adorably called the Catholic Princess Retreat. The girls were taught about various topics of the Church, including the Eucha- rist and prayer, but above those, they were taught about their inherent dignity as women and as daughters of God. A coronation ceremony was held for all the girls in attendance, during which they received tiaras. It certainly made for a good heart- string-tug. Team Auto- maticus Rex competed in the Lego competition on Jan. 16 at Dakota Ridge High School and earned the first place Champion's award for their robot built entirely from Legos. The name "Automaticus Rex" is Latin for "robot king," and they indeed proved they were king of the robots in this particular competition, though we're sure they had help from their patron saints King St. Louis, Teresa of Avila and Maximillian Kolbe. First Lego League is a sports-for-the-mind competition for children aged nine to fourteen, and its goal is to get young people excited about science and technology while teaching them important team-building skills. Automaticus Rex's victory qualifies them to compete in the First Lego League World Festival this month in St. Louis, where over 100 of the best teams from around the world will compete. Automaticus Rex has not only proved themselves as adept young engineers, but also that playing with toys can indeed be great food for the heart, mind and soul. We're rooting for you, Automaticus Rex! Sister shares mercy story that inspired Dead Man Walking Though you may not be familiar with her, Sister Helen Prejean is a pretty big deal. She recently paid a visit to St. Frances Cabrini Parish in Littleton and shared her powerful story. In 1995, a film starring Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn was made based on a book Sister Prejean wrote, called Dead Man Walking. Sister Prejean published the book in 1993 based on her relationship with death row inmate Elmo Patrick Sonnier. She served as his spiritual advisor in the months leading up to his execution, an experience which has made her a passionate advocate for the abolition of the death penalty. Her story should make us all take a step back and really think about what it means to be merciful, especially during this Jubilee Year of Mercy.
