For instance, a tap M10 x 1.5 (1.5 indicates the pitch) has a 10 mm diameter, a 1.5 mm pitch, and requires an 8.5 mm drill. [10 mm tap - 1.5 mm pitch = 8.5 mm drill]. Under this process, the pitch of the screw is the distance between two threads. The drill size is equal to the screw size minus the pitch.
