integrated with their radio systems loved how it worked and didn't want to switch back to using their regular satellite phones. "For larger teams who have to interact with many people, satellite phones with push-to-talk can make a huge difference," said Talman. "But for smaller groups or teams, a regular satellite phone would be a more affordable solution." For motorcycle racers, the push-to-talk capabilities may also be a great benefit for safety reasons alone. "If a rider is in a deep canyon, he or she only needs a 30-degree view of the sky to make a call," said Talman. "The system can also be integrated into headsets so riders can stay in constant communication with the team, or make a call to EMTs if a rider becomes hurt or injured in an accident." Reducing The Costs The Satellite Store is working on becoming an "Official Partner" of SCORE International. Currently, renting a phone and service costs about $200 per week. But Satellite Phone Store will have special pricing available to SCORE teams for both phones and service. Talman recommends teams should consider how they are going to utilize a satellite phone during a race and for pre-running before they look for options when renting a system. "If a team is doing all SCORE races a year with one or two vehicles and chase trucks, they may want a regular satellite phone for the race vehicle and one for a chase vehicle," said Talman. "Groups of four or more can really benefit from the push-to-talk features on a phone and can manage all of their services online." Talman and Satellite Phone Store will also offer SCORE teams opportunities to see and learn how the various services offered can work for them. With a 5,000 square foot facility in San Diego, California, Talman extends an invitation for any team to come by and discuss their satellite needs before the rush of getting ready for a race. With new technologies in satellite communication and better equipment availability, SCORE teams can improve their communication in Baja and stay in touch with family and friends in the U.S. with a clearer and more reliable network than what they have used in the past.
