Issue 40 / 2012 ALBUM OF THE MONTH Apollo Brown & OC - Trophies HIP HOP / RNB 35 www.guestlist.net GUESTLIST RECOMMENDS AFROBEATS REVOLUTION Richard, the man behind the beat. The Azonto is slowly becoming a phenomenon. 7 Hip-hop music is the sound of the street, and this form of art is presently revived in its purest, old- school form by the people at Mello Music group, where Apollo Brown is head honcho. Detroit, also known as Rock City, is a place where good music and top artists always had a home, despite the hard life of a city hit by recession and crime. The latest album Apollo Brown produced in collaboration with MC OC is called Trophies, and it is any true rap heads delight. Judging by the huge success it had online (#1 on undergroundhiphop. com), the album couldn't have been released soon enough. One MC and one producer, back to back, no featurings, no half-measures. Raw beats, intelligent lyrics and a clear message: the trophies in life are beyond material possessions or selfish ambitions. I recommend this album to anybody who fancies themselves a serious music lover - it combines vintage flavour with elevated lyricism reflecting a new urban mentality. Richard began forging a name for himself almost 13 years ago, he started out making hip hop beats in a little home studio in Mitcham. However, last year he rose to fame with the release of the song 'Azonto', which was accompanied by an energetic fusion of fluid and robotic dance movements. The single instantly became a hit in Ghana, crossing over to the mainstream afrobeats scene. It has been WATCH THE THRONE played on BBC 1xtra and many underground radio stations, this is definitely one to look out for as he combines a low bass with lazy but catchy undertones, reminiscent of house music. This year is most likely the year that afrobeats breaks out and becomes a musical force to be reckoned with. TOUR SCHEDULE : STOOSHE Alex, Courtney and Karis are the girls that make up R&B and soul girl-group Stooshe. Their joint album released last autumn was a hit with songs such as 'Paris', 'No Church in the wild' and 'Otis' it was only right for them to do a tour. Their show at the London O2 arena was a sell out to that ef- fect they did 5 nights straight day after day. Their 2hr 30minute set was 'Murder to Excellence'. The atmosphere was immense where they did not only play tracks from their album but some of their older classic hits from both artists such as 99 Problems Big Pimpin and Jesus Walks and Gold Digger. The main focus was the hit song Paris to which was re- peated 5x to end the show.
