Issue 40 / 2012 ARTIST OF THE MONTH Xilent aka Eryk Kowalczyk DRUM N BASS / DUBSTEP 41 www.guestlist.net ALBUM OF THE MONTH BNC EP by ICICLE 7 The popularity of dubstep in recent years has given way to numerous mutations of the sound. Hailing from Warsaw, Xilent, aka Eryk Kowalczykhas, has established himself as one of the most exciting talents in the D&B scene. Xilent truly announced him- self last year with his debut dubstep channel and reaching num- ber 1 on the beatport charts. Coverage on Radio 1 shortly followed and people began to take notice of the produc- er from Poland. A year later, with Me II'. Hitting over a million views release via UKF's 'Choose youtube and releases through Viper, Mainframe, Audioporn and many other labels, 2011/12 has been an extremely suc- cessful period for the young artist. Xilent has several appearances recently teamed up with Sub Focus, who personally asked the producer to provide a re- mix for the highly successful 'Out of The Blue'. To many, Xilent is the king of a unique dubstep sound, challenging screwface simplicity. How- ever, Xilent has never been a one genre producer and his brand new 4 track 'Ultrafunk EP' showcases his signature drum n bass sound that has been tearing the rooves off clubs and been eagerly jumped on by some of Radio 1's most respected dance DJs. With depth technical excellence, Xilent has always been something special and he continues to prove that the future holds more excitement. and concentrated JUNE RELEASES KRYPTIC MINDS Aksum / When Two Paths Cross (TECTONIC) FANTASTIC MR FOX San'en EP (BLACK ACRE) DOC DANEEKA Murdah Strings EP (ROSKA KICKS & SNARES) HOSPITALITY SUMMER D&B 2012 Compilation (HOSPITAL RECORDS) CJ ANDRE & NITRO IMPULSE Tsunami EP (CALIBER MUSIC) MAGE We Are Not Angels (KILL INC DRUM N BASS) such strength, Icicle dropping his first full dubstep release. This guy keeps on point with his production. Icicle lives up to his name once again with four more chill-to-the-bone beats. His pre- vious dubstep releases like 'Minimal Dub' caused massive ripples within the scene for being innovative and refreshing. 'Acid Step' has already been getting people skanking hard in the raves for the past few months with its all encompassing, super down low bass line and lightly scattered percussion. 'BNC' has a much more jungle fever feel to it, incorporating off key drums and a whomping bass line. It could quite easily be the soundtrack to of some kind of midnight, deep-jungle tribal dance. The aptly named 'Need a Job' really piles on the pressure with crashing cymbals and an advancing vocal sample. In contrast, 'Together in the Dust' uses pads reminiscent of Logistic's 'Toy Town' and the minimal Icicle formula, to create a deep and spacious chiller of a tune. Each track shows off Icicle's ability to make highly technical tunes with consistently tight production. The EP further solidifies his position as one of the coolest dubstep producers around.
