BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED 2016 FOOTBALL PREVIEW ✦ 27 Brian Kelly: Top Of The Wins Chart The retirement at the end of last sea‑ son by Virginia Tech's Frank Beamer (279 career wins) and the abrupt de‑ parture/retirement of South Carolina's Steve Spurrier (228 career wins) sud‑ denly put Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly atop all current Football Bowl Subdivision coaches in career victories. Kelly was 118‑35‑2 (.768) at Grand Valley State from 1991‑2003, followed by 19‑16 (.543) at Central Michigan from 2004‑06, then 34‑6 (.850) at Cin‑ cinnati from 2007‑09 and 55‑23 (.705) at Notre Dame the past six years for a 226‑80‑2 (.737) total. The next five on the list for most wins among active coaches are Texas State's Dennis Franchione (213‑135‑2), Kansas State's Bill Snyder (193‑101‑1), Ala‑ bama's Nick Saban (191‑60‑1), Oklaho‑ ma's Bob Stoops (180‑46) and Georgia Tech's Paul Johnson (168‑83). It is not an apples‑to‑apples chart be‑ cause whereas coaches such as Saban, Stoops and Snyder have coached only at the Football Bowl Subdivision level, Kelly's total includes Division II Grand Valley State. Nevertheless, when including his GVSU stint, Kelly is seventh among active winning coaches in winning per‑ centage with at least 10 years in the field: Top Active Coaches In Winning Percentage 1. Ohio State's Urban Meyer — 154-27 (.851) 2. Washington's Chris Petersen — 107-24 (.817) 3. Oklahoma's Bob Stoops — 180-46 (.796) 4. Alabama's Nick Saban — 191-60-1 (.760) 5. TCU's Gary Patterson — 143-47 (.753) 6. Miami's Mark Richt — 145-51 (.740) 7. Notre Dame's Brian Kelly — 226‑80‑2 (.737) Kelly's 226 career victories are the most among all active Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches. PHOTO BY BILL PANZICA
