After experiencing first hand the shocking health care system in Zambia, UK doctor Huw Jones set up the Virtual Doctors Charity. Based in Brighton, it uses expert help from volunteer doctors and they provide direct and individual support for the health workers in Zambia. Most people are too sick to walk or cycle to the hospital so they depend on the health centres. Virtual Doctors now supports 19 rural health centres.Cases that come into the health centres gets transferred to doctors with a relevant specialism, whether it is skin diseases or HIV and Aids-related problems. The doctor that recieves the information in the UK will have a list of the drugs and any of the equipment kept in the health centre in Zambia and then from there they can suggest treatment or further tests based on what is practical and available. In Zambia, mobile-networks are improving everyday and this could mean better communication bewteen the doctors and the health care volunteers. Another great aspect is the fact the Zambian government is fuy backing the system and approves of it's support fr the volunteers. Muyeba Chikonde, Zambia's high commissioner in the UK said he is really pleased with the support. He says that it's being done in the spirit of 'ubuntu' which is a southern African spiritual term which means 'showing humanity towards others'. Virtual Doctors are hopung to move to other sub-Saharan African countries who are also in desperate need such as Tanzania and Uganda.
