18 ISSUE 90 / 2016 TRAVEL 1. Get cycling. When it comes to getting across Amsterdam, cycling definitely beats the rest. Bike hires are everywhere in the city and aren't as expensive as you'd imagine. With around 800,000 bikes in the city (that's more bikes then people), the city is basically built for cycling. Cycle lanes are everywhere meaning you can see all the sights of the city while travelling between destinations. Just a few rules to remember, definitely lock you bike, don't cycle alongside you friends and following the traffic lights. 2. Check out the architecture. The city has a very distinct building style. The tall terrace houses with huge windows are everywhere in the city and look amazing, not matter what time of year. Now you may be getting a little wonky will there, but the Dutch are ready - halve the buildings are wonky already. Some of the best views can be found in the Jordaan estate - also a place full of bars and coffee house, handy! 3. Try out some amazing Dutch food. There is a lot more Dutch food than cheese toasties, though they are world leaders when it comes to those. The Dutch also have loads of other tasty treats to enjoy, whether you're high or not. Stuff yourself with Bittenballen, their famous Dutch fries, Stroopwafel and if you're feeling up for it some raw herring. It's supposedly a great hangover cure, which is just as well because you should... 4. Try some of the many different beers. The bars are full of amazing beers, and usually the staff are willing to help you find one you love. Don't go for the boring Heineken's or Amstel's - there is so much choice from incredible German wheat beers to mouth watering Belgian beers. Of course there are many Dutch beers to try too, many from mirco-brewery's across the city. 5. Learn a little Dutch. You'd be surprised how far knowing your dank u wel's and alstublieft's will get you. Yes, most Dutch people are fluent in English, but they love it if you have at least tried learning some words and phrases and you'll notice a change in how they treat you. MUST DO'S IN DAM With the Amsterdam Dance Event and Innovation In The Dam fast approaching you're sure a lot of you are heading over to one of Europe's party capitals. While you may be heading over for parties, you won't be raving 100% of the time. So we've sorted this list for you with some hints and tips on what to do you're not pulling shapes.
