The game-changing DJ crew pioneered the turntabilsm movement and are returning to these shores following an 18-year absence Starting out in 1989, under the name of Shadow of the Prophet and with a line-up of DJ Qbert, Mix Master Mike, and DJ Apollo, the Invisibl Skratch Pikls turned turntablism into a movement and an artform, mixing samples into new music and using turntables as instru- ments. Following DJ Apollo's departure from the group in '93 and the additions of DJ Disk, Shortkut, DJ Flare, Yogafrog, D-Styles, and A-Trak, the crew was most prolific between 1995-2000, releasing various mix projects and albums, includ- ing their debut LP The 13th Floor, and assisting in the design of hardware for Vestax and Ortofon. What the Piklz are most famous for is DJ battles and competitions - the International Turntablist Federation battle between themselves and the X-Men is particularly legendary. DMC world champs multiple times, it has been said that they were asked to stop competing because other DJ crews were discouraged from even entering. Having taken a hiatus since 2000, the crew was coaxed back on stage at the 2014 Red Bull Thre3style World Finals in Baku. That performance seems to have re-ignited the Piklz, as they recorded another album at Red Bull Studios To- kyo last year. Now as a trio - DJ Qbert, D-Styles and Shortkut - they're coming back to the DMC World DJ Finals in London this September, making their first UK perfor- mance since 1998. Grace Jones is, simply put, an icon and an inspired choice to to headline after the controversy surrounding their original pick, M.I.A. Her performance will no doubt bring an injection of style, and energy to the stage. Birmingham signer / songwriter Laura Mvula joins with her rich tones set for a soul-searching show and it will be great to see the energetic indie-punk of The Noisettes back in action. Written by Godheld herself, and produced by MOBO Award-winning musician and producer Victizzle, 'Can't Pull Me Down' is a thumping bass-heavy offering, with a powerful and defiant message from the London native. Hailed for her stunning vocal abilities and vulnerable songwriting, Lola has already been supported by the likes of BET, Capital Xtra, Complex UK, Link Up TV, ILUVLIVE, Afropunk and The Source. With her new single 'Can't Pull Me Down' and the forthcoming Black Water EP, Lola Godheld is finally coming into her own this year.
