How was Pig and Dan first developed? it was a mutual friend of ours that re introduced us. We first met on a plane in 1999. I was waffling on about being a Drum and Bass DJ and he said I'm into music too and we should hook up. We never really followed up that conversation. We exchanged numbers on the bus from the airplane to the terminal. A couple of years later a mutual friend of ours said hey you have to meet this guy called pig. I said is there a person called Pig? My friend said his name is Pig because he likes to consume things. I thought I need to meet this guy. so I went over to his house and the funny thing is we didn't even realise that we were the two guys that had met two years prior on that plane. It wasn't until I left his house, it clicked and I realised actually we should be doing something because we have been brought together twice by fate and it's no coincidence. So we did and it was a really good synergy and it's so hard to find it in production, we agree and disagree in harmony, I was bringing in the Drum and Bass vibe and he was bringing in the Balearic House vibe and what we created was a signature sound as much as you can do in a four to the floor genre. You guys have been going strong through thick and thin and you haven't done any solo projects, why is that? If it's not broken don't fix it the funny thing is in reality we do solo projects but it comes under the Pig and Dan umbrella. How that works for example is, because we're both always travelling on planes we kind of write together but separately its a strange thing, but say were flying a 14-hour flight to Argentina, I'll work on the track and Pig will work on a track and then we swap computers. It's really weird. There are some tracks where we have both written 90% of the tracks alone and the other person assist a little bit. I generally always finalize the tracks and do the final mix down. Pig is more of the chaos and I'm the organised & musically educated one and it's a very special relationship. Even if we write a tarck alone , we write with the other person in mind.We have been working for 15 years together and I can write a track like Pig was beside me and he would be like now that's crap and vice versa we know what we like as a team. Were deep in this and we have no desire to do solo projects. You've had another album out and your first release on one of the biggest Techno labels ever, how did that feel getting signed to Drumcode? we know Adam beyer and we have done known him for quite a few years from playing at Cocoon back in the old days. He's to come to the after-hours in Ibiza when Sven Vath was playing some of his crazy 10 hour sets. We kind of hooked up on a personal level, we played a few gigs together and the last few years Me and Pig we're like we really wanted to get on Drumcode. So we kept sending Adam material and he was like I love playing it but it's not right and when he finally decided to go for a single he decided to go for two singles so it's even better. The honour is outrageously massive and I think this year it's been a very special year for us, because we've managed to spread our wings a bit further because we've been on Diynamic to the likes of Drumcode. It's been a mind- blowing year for real, I write it on Facebook and stuff because I really do feel its mind- blowing to be working with Solomon and Adam Bayer and with now doing collaborations with both guys. The whole collaboration thing has come together with Pig and Dan and a few key industry players which I'm super excited about. On the collaboration side of things, we've always worked with Monika Kruse it's always been a signature thing to come out with one or two Eps every year, so It's been a year of collaborations to be honest whats going on with your own label, Elevate? Basically Elevate we just had three Eps called 'The A Sides' with the likes of Julian Jeweil, Aitor Ronda & Rob Hes, who are some really big artists who killed it in the Beatport charts, we are super happy to have them on board but up and coming now we have some really known unknown artist which really shows that Elevate is organically growing and we're really proud that it's happening We also just had a killer releases by Wehbba who is an amazing producer he's done something with a bit more darker and Techier than I've ever heard him do and he said it's really cool to work with Elevate so it gave him the chance to take a slightly different angle than his usual sound, We also have Victor Ruiz who's also come up with a much dirtier sound than he has normally, we are starting to mould a sound which is recognisable in a way which is melodic, but it still has the dirt and crunch that we so love playing in our sets. That's how we play, we play music which has a lot of music in it which is driving and melodic. Right now we're headlining gigs which has 50% girls and that's saying something amazing for Techno. Let's face it, Techno gigs used to be proper sausage fests. Our aim is to spread good time music it's all about smiley faces and that's it., when I used to go out as a raver I went out to have a laugh and have a good time and you know if you have just banging darkness all the time it's fine and it's great but I need to smile and laugh and also recognise melodies and even vocals here and there. Sometimes Techno can be seriously monotonous. I'm really happy where Techno it's getting to the stage where you can add to that shine and smile into the music, without being cheesy biscuits. ISSUE 91 / 2016 29 Pig&Dan are one of the biggest duos in techno. They bring a fresh approach to a very rigid techno sound.
