GUESTLIST RECOMMENDS: THE FRIGHTNRS - NOTHING MORE TO SAY The educators are back at Scala. The Frightnrs' first full length album, Nothing Left To Say proves exactly that the classic Jamican rocksteady sound can speak for a new generation. The rocksteady sound was born in the summer of 1967 in Jamaica as bands broke the pace of ska. Though the sound didn't leave a lasting impression, dropping almost off the radar by late 1968. That is until now as The Frightnrs are dragging the rocksteady sound back and taking it to new places! The band's new album dropped on September 2nd and saw them at there very best. The creativity of lead singer, Dan Klein, is clear throughout and is all the more powerful following his death in June 2016 after being diagnosed with ALS last year. November 30th will see the Kings Cross club filled with peace, love and three heavyweight sound systems. The Channel One Sound-System, Leeds' Iration Steppas, and Aba-Shanti-I will come together for a big night of reggae roots music - and yes they've all armed to the max with killer dubplates! Once again throughout the night they'll be promoting the togetherness that music innately promotes with the three sound systems pulling out some big, conscious roots music. Head on down and skank out from 10 till 6 to the sweet sounds of music and soaking in the University of Dub's unparalleled vibes. EVENT PREVIEW : UNIVERSITY OF DUB ARTIST OF THE MONTH: EQUIKNOXX Vote Equinoxx for nu dancehall riddims Jamaican duo Equiknoxx released Bird Sound Power last month on DDS, and it's the freshest, most potent thing dancehall has seen since Major Lazer's Guns Don't Kill People… Lazers Do. Anyone that got the crossover appeal of early Major Lazer – and considering even Beyoncé sampled it, I'm willing to say that's a lot of people - will understand what Equiknoxx are up to. This underground dancehall is destined for greatness. It's far more likely to please continental, British or American fans of forward- thinking electronic music than it is to please listeners of mainstream dancehall, but at its peaks, like the huge tune 'Last of the Mohicans', which recalls the endlessly versatile trap of TNGHT, it has truly pandemic potential. Having made music together for over 8 years, Galvsborg and Bobby Blackbird, AKA Equiknoxx, have got more than a few tricks up their sleeve as producers. The innovative dancehall squad use psychedelic bird calls to identify their tracks, nodding to dub sounds, along with heavy hip hop drums. Without a heavy international tour schedule, they've already worked with veteran artists like Beenie Man and Busy Signal –sky's the limit.
